FOX IN CHURCH YARD

 By  J. D. GRIFFITHS.

Half a century ago the Flint and Denbigh Hounds had a most enjoyable day’s sport. The meet was at Northop, the Master Mr. Owen Williams of Bodelwyddan. Two foxes were found; the first near Soughton Hall. He shot away and went to earth near New Brighton village.
The second fox was found in Gwysaney Wood at about three o’clock in the afternoon. The fox made his way to Blackbrook, along the Alun Meadows, then via Rhydygolau and Henffordd, to take refuge in the Church Yard, where an exciting scene was witnessed by a large number of townspeople who had quickly got to the spot. After dodging among the gravestones the fox made his way into the vicarage grounds where he stayed for some lime. Eventually, the fox made a bolt for it by jumping into the vicarage field. But he failed to elude the hounds and was killed as he was about to jump the wall into the main Queesferry Road. Very rarely has the finish of a hunt been witnessed by so many people. As a momento of the occasion the ‘ Brush’ was presented to the Revd. J.P.Poole Hughes, Vicar of Mold.
